That ‘is this UK uni accommodation or a Swedish prison’ game is so funny but also so depressing
#literally it’s bringing back flashbacks of my final year of undergrad when i realised i was going to have to live on campus#or close to campus because i’d forgotten how to drive because i’d been in america for a year sans car#but then i missed the deadlines for good acommodation (because america) so i went for the cheapest option that was still available to me#which was a room in a building that ended up being CONDEMNED at the end of that academic year#guys it was so bad. there was racist graffiti all over the walls because no one had any respect for the place#broken glass in the courtyard. no lounge; you had to sit on the metal stairs to hang out#the stairwells just had brick walls. the kitchens were built to be shared by 6 persons maximum but forced to house 9 so they were so cramped#it was unbelieveable. i started eating at weird times so i wouldn’t have to awkwardly stare at someone while waiting for a counter/stovetop#to be free. on top of this there were wasp and silverfish infestations; my window was so drafty that hailstones came in once#the mattresses were full of fiberglass and felt like they were made up entirely of springs; and there were ground-in vomit and piss stains#on my chair and floor#and i paid ~£90.50 per week~ for this#the only thing that kept me sane was the free bus pass. i never missed a class and i went to campus every single day#and attended tons of random events and guest lectures just to not be in my room. i’d be the only person in the library at 8am on a sunday#my flatmates were a bunch of insane first years who drank and screamed at all hours so that didn’t help either. i didn’t make any friends#it was just so bad. there were never any community events taking place either and i saw the RAs exactly once. they were completely useless#reception nearly lost the kindle i ordered. i thought about doing laundry once and saw that the laundry room was absolute unmitigated chaos#so i was like ‘fuck it i’ll just wait until i’m home next weekend’ and i went into town to buy clothes to tide me over#it was just such a horrible experience. and i hate that it’s a universal one#uk universities are really like ‘give us £9k in tuition fees and also pay an arm and a leg for your accommodation.#no we will not be improving our accommodation’ it makes me fucking crazy. like where is my money GOING#you find out they spent millions refurbishing a building that didn’t need to be refurbished and you’re like. you could’ve replaced#the carpet in my room for maybe a couple of hundred quid considering how small the room is#pisses me off. my advice to undergrads is visit potential halls of residence and read reviews of them#and don’t just let them dazzle you with the tour where they only show you the good rooms - poke around. see if there’s damp or wasps#look for stains. etc. or better yet; find a half decent landlord and rent a room in a house#i had a way better time during my master’s and it was because i talked to landlords and visited their houses and brought my nosy mum#and i picked a landlord who only housed postgrads; mature students & professionals. you couldn’t pay me to live in halls again#personal#rant

I just looked up whether my new mattress has fiberglass in it and uh
Tumblr media
The wording here is so insidious. "Other companies use cheap, low quality fiberglass in their mattresses. We use nice, high quality glass fibers in ours. It's totally different." No wonder they were trying to sell us on the "allergy mattress protector" so hard...
Anyway please remember what OP said about commissioning them if you have the means
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did you know it’s legal in the USA for mattress companies to put fiberglass in their mattresses? They don’t even have to label them! So if you wanna commission me so I can buy a new bed I won’t stop you

What I'm working on today:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Painting my free shit!
Picked up both of these last week on my walks back from the library where they were set next to dumpsters.
The plaster column was a dirt-smudged white originally. It's destined to be the plant stand for some purple heart that I'm currently rooting from cuttings. Might make it more fancy by painting some of the details in different colors, but for now this green will do.
The screen door was unused but has a little damage from where it had obviously been resting on damp concrete in a garage. Nothing major though. It's tall enough, but not quite wide enough to fit my back door. But! Easily fixed by adding a 2" board, which I have, so I'll be screwing that directly to the door frame and attaching the hinges to it instead of to the frame. I love this peacock blue I found while searching through all my oops paint for something suitable. The back door is a very deep purple, so it will stand out but still "go".
Imma use the rest of the quart of blue to paint the refurbished hoosier cabinet once I get around to that. I found some wrapping paper from Ikea in my craft storage that will match that I can decoupage the inside with. Plus I'm dead certain I have some fabric that will match both of them to use for the cat bed insert. Kinda getting excited about it--maybe I'll try stripping it tomorrow afternoon...

Thinkin about:
tryin to figure out how to truncate my commissions TOS so that people might actually commission me
raisin my prices after the end of the month, in the hopes of maybe attracting customers for a while
figurin out carrd so that I have a good place for said TOS to look nice and be readable (people can't get mad at this over a mile-long dni; tho admittedly I disagree with the idea of pissing on people who have a dni list At All- just. make it readable, yeah? it's mostly for potential followers anyways, less so casuals)
drumming up advertising again so that I might be able to do something nice for myself on my birthday (July 7th); now's as good a time as any as a lot of the things I was wantin stop bein available at the end of this month (at least two makeship things I was eyeballin, plus some kinda limited preorder- did y'all see those sword pins I reblogged a while ago?); also maybe smth to further the dessert idea I had goin for that day (since it's summer I decided to do ice cream instead of cake), and maybe an actual supper that day too (bc it kinda slipped my mind lmao); also I really really really want new pairs of pants, and maybe some new bras

i'm no mattress expert, but i just wanted to chime in and warn folks that it's pretty common to use fiberglass as a flame retardant material in mattresses--even though it can get everywhere (including your lungs) if you remove your mattress cover. so don't ever remove your mattress cover!! but also, there's instances of fiberglass leaking out of mattresses through the cover, so it's a good idea to get another cover if you think you might have a fiberglass mattress. sometimes it will list it on a tag, though sometimes they use words with glass in it that sound fancier even though it's just a form of fiberglass. you can also find lists of brands known to use it online. here's one on reddit i found. or look into organic brands that use wool and cotton instead if you'd like to avoid the headache entirely!
(and because i'm paranoid for reddit's future, screenshots under the cut)
